Winona Ryder, professionally Winona Ryder was born on Winona Minnesota. The parents named her Winona for the town she grew up in. Michel Horowitz was her father as well as Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors and editors. Ryder's dad came from a Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. The actress has also a half-sister named Sunyata Jubal. Her older brother is Uria. Ryder moved together with her family to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. At the time, there were no electric lights. Ryder was a voracious book reader because there was television. At the age of 12 Ryder joined the American Conservatory Theatre to take acting classes. Lucas the film, which was released in 1986 which was her first big character. Ryder was only fifteen when she landed the role. Ryder suffered bullying in the high school. Her hope was that her acting career would end this. It didn't turn out. However, she kept working towards her goals. Beetlejuice the 1988 Tim Burton film, was her debut big breakthrough. Ryder was able to continue playing characters that made a splash in several movies. In 1993 she won an Oscar Prize in the film The Age of Innocence.
